Our Halloween Campout
October 3-5, 2003

My teenage grandsons are having a Halloween party around the campfire.  This is something they would never do at home, but camping is different. They don't have to make impressions and can just have fun.

My daughter and I are decorating the camp site for Halloween. The boys will invite some of the other camper teens over for the campfire at night.  We are serving some spooky snacks.

Halloween Recipes

Bloody Popcorn

Ingredients:
2 qt. popped pop corn
2 Tbsp. melted butter
red food paste

Preparation:
In a large bowl add the popcorn. Add a bit of the red food paste to the melted butter, and drizzle over the popcorn. Stir gently to spread over the color red.

Notes:
Be sure to use food paste, not the food coloring that is sold in the grocery store.

Busy Bugs

Serving Size: 36

Notes:
These are yummy cookies. Perfect for a Halloween Party, or anything bug related. Be sure to have plenty of napkins on hand. The chocolate does melt in your hands.

Ingredients:
1 (12 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
1 (12 oz.) pkg. butterscotch chips
1 1/2 C. peanuts
1 large can chow mein noodles

Preparation:
Melt chips in double boiler or microwave and pour over noodles and nuts. Mix well and drop by spoonfuls on ungreased cookie sheet. Chill until firm.

Crock Pot Caramel Apples

Serving Size: 8

Notes:
These are easy to make. The extras you can add on are only limited by your imagination.

Ingredients:
2 pkg. (14 oz.) caramels
1/4 C. water
8 apples
8 sticks
optional
nuts
M&M's
mini chocolate chips
candy decorations

Preparation:
In crock pot, combine caramels and water. Cover and cook on high for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring frequently. Wash and dry apples. Insert stick into stem end of each apple. Turn control on low. Dip apple into hot caramel and turn to coat entire surface. Holding apple above pot, scrape off excess caramel from bottom apple. Place on greased wax paper to cool. Once the caramel has set you may wish to roll the apples in the toppings of your choice.

Frozen Hand

Serving Size: 1

Notes:
This is a great addition to punch!

Ingredients:
1 qt. Koolaide, your choice of color (red, blue, green)
1 rubber or sturdy plastic glove
1 rubber band

Preparation:
Make sure you rinse the glove well if you intend to put this into something that will be consumed. Some rubber gloves come with a fuzzy lining inside, avoid those!  Place 1 quart of koolaide in a bowl. For a witch you might want green, or for a space alien you might want to blue. Pour koolaide into glove, tie off glove with a rubber band. Lay glove on its side in your freezer, and freeze overnight. It is a good idea to put the glove on a cookie sheet, or in a large flat container, as a bit of the liquid may leak. When frozen solid remove glove, and place into punch of your desired color (blood red, slime green) or use Glycol Punch.

Glycol Punch

Serving Size: Varies

Notes:
This punch has a fantastic color. The punch also tastes pretty good. If you want an excellent effect for punch this is the one to go for. Diet Mountain Dew produces the best color.

Ingredients:
2 liters of Diet Mountain Dew
1 pkg. Blue Koolaide prepared

Preparation:
In a large punch bowl add the Diet Mountain Dew. Add in enough of the prepared Blue Kool-Aide to obtain the Glycol color. We obtained our color with about 3 cups of Koolaide.

Kitty Litter Cake

Serving Size: 24

Notes:
This is a fun cake! It might look gross, but it does taste good!

Ingredients:
1 (18 oz.) box spice or german chocolate cake mix
1 (18 oz.) box white cake mix
1 pkg. white sandwich cookies
1 large box vanilla instant pudding mix
12 small tootsie rolls
1 litter box (preferably a NEW one!)
1 plastic scoop
green food coloring

Preparation:
Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans). Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble. Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in blender, they tend to stick, so scrape often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix using a fork or shake in a jar.
When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. You probably won't need all of the pudding, mix with the cake and "feel" it, you don't want it soggy, just moist; gently combine. Put mixture into clean litter box.

Put three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls and bury in mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top, this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter. Heat remaining Tootsie Rolls, three at a time in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Serve with a new pooper scooper.
