Date Your Mate Month
"It's not too late
to make a date,
but be sure it's
with your spousal mate!

Do not wait
or hesitate,
Or this rhyme
I'll regurgitate!

Sorry, got a little carried away there. Just wanted to remind you that you can always add some spice to your marriage with a "date" -- just like before you got married! You remember how, don't you?

National Day of Prayer- Jo

May Day
Mankind has celebrated the arrival of spring and rebirth of nature since antiquity, making May Day perhaps the oldest holiday of all.
May Day has also been a rather lusty celebration through the ages. It was once common for young adults to draw lots and pair off to "go a maying" in the woods all May Eve night! The Puritans, however, mightily disapproved of such immoral behavior, to say nothing of the phallic symbolism of the May Pole, and in America May Day became a much more tame celebration.
May Day is still celebrated in Europe and some North American cities with maypoles, dancing, the gathering of spring flowers, and the crowning of a May Queen. Many romantic customs are associated with May Day as well:
Secretly plant a tree in front of your sweetheart's windows to ensure your feelings will grow big and strong like the tree. (German)
Plant a tree in front of the newlyweds' homes to insure the longevity of the marriage. (Bavarian)
Rise before dawn and wash with dew collected on May morn to guarantee youth or love anew.
Wear a white dogwood blossom on the bosom on May morning, and the first man encountered wearing a white hat will have the Christian name of the future husband.
Take a mirror and hold it over a well on May Day to see a reflection of the future husband.
Look for birds nests on May 1; the number of eggs will tell the number of years to be single.

If you can't be there for the annual "run for the roses" (kentuckyderby.com), you can do the next best thing by preparing a cold batch of mint juleps to sip while you watch the televised race!
To make a mint julep:
4 sprigs mint
1 teaspoon sugar
crushed or shaved ice
1.5 jiggers of bourbon
Up to 30 minutes before serving, crush three mint sprigs with the sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Add ice to top of glass. Add bourbon, without stirring. Add more ice if desired, then place in freezer until time to serve. Garnish with remaining mint sprig before serving. Serve with a straw.

Semik Festival (Russia)
Held on the seventh Thursday after Easter ("Semy" means "the seventh"), young girls would go into the forest to "frolic" and gather boughs. Of course, they were soon joined by the young men!
The young women would make wreaths from the tree boughs and throw them into a stream. If the wreath floated, she would be married within a year!
In another Semik custom, young lovers would throw "crowns" made of birch tree branches tied with ribbons into the air. It was considered very lucky for the crowns to touch in midair, and the couple would save the ribbon to decorate their marriage candles!
