Spirit in the Sky Tutorial

Supplies
PSP 9 used but could be done in other versions
Incredimail and Letter Creator to display your results.
Choose an image with lots of sky.  Height no more than 400.
If you resize, sharpen if necessary.
Zip file contains my graphic and 3 Tubes.

Preparation:
One purpose of this tutorial if to learn how to create and use a custom brush.
Open desired tube
File/Export/Custom Brush
Name your new brush
OK
You now have a brush you can use in any color you want.

Open your image. Resize to Height no more than 400.
Adjust/Sharpen if necessary
Copy and paste as a new image.  Close the original.

In your materials palette choose a light or medium color for the foreground and a darker color for the background.

Once settings are given they will remain the same unless designated.

*Any similarity to any other tutorial in purely coincidental.

Let's Begin:

1 - Using your selection tool (Square) select a piece of your sky.
Use default settings. 
Copy and paste as a new image.
Deselect.

 

2 - With this new image highlighted, Adjust/Blur/Guassian Blur - Setting 10.

3 - Effects/Distortion Effects/Pixelate - Settings Block width 13, Block height 13, Symmetric checked.

4 - Effects/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling
Settings - Mirror, Bidirectional checked, H & V offset 0, Width 50.
* You may want to lower the opacity of your background to make it more text friendly.

5 - Minimize for later use.

6 - Highlight your graphic.

7 - Image/Add Borders - 3 - Use your darker color. Symmetric checked.

8 - Select this border with magic wand - Replace, RBG Value, Tolerance 20, Feather 0, Contiguous & antialias checked, Outside

9 - Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel - Settings - Bevel # 2, Width 2, Smoothness 20, Depth 2, Ambience & Shininess 0, Color White, Angle 315, Intensity 50, Elevation 30. 

10 - Deselect

11 - Image/Add Borders - 20 - Use any color not in your image. Symmetric checked

12 - Select this border with magic wand.

13 - In Materials, choose pattern and set it to the pattern you created earlier -  Angle 0 Scale 100

14 - Fill this border with the pattern.  Do Not Deselect.

15 - Effects/Texture Effects/Mosaic Antique - Settings - # columns 50, # rows 50, Tile Diffusion 70, Grout width 2, Grout diffusion 50, Symmetric checked.

Steps 16, 17 & 18 are optional.

16 - Selections/Invert

17 - Effects/3D Effects/Cutout - Settings - V & H 5, Opacity 70, Blur 15, Color black, Fill Interior with color Unchecked.

18 - Repeat Cutout using V & H minus 5

19 - Deselect

20 - Image/Add Borders - 10 - Use your darker color.  Symmetric checked.

21 - Select this border with your wand.

22 - Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel 

23 - Deselect

24 - Image/Add Borders - 30 - Use any color not in your graphic.

25 - Select this border and fill with your pattern.

26 - Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel 

27 - Image/Add Borders - 5 - Use your darker color.  Symmetric checked.

28 - Select this border with wand.

29 - Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel 

30 - Layers/New Raster Layer

31 - Deselect

32 - Choose your Paint Brush and find the brush you created earlier.

33 - Choose a color for your brush in the foreground of your materials palette.

34 - Choose a size relative to your image.  I set mine at 200.0

35 - *Optional - Apply brush to your framed image.

36 - Adjust the opacity of this layer as desired.  I used 50.

37 - Save your Header, optimized (File/Export/jpeg optimizer - 25%).

38 - Save your background pattern you created earlier., optimized as above

39 - Assemble in Letter Creator.
